ACS DESIGN was commissioned by a local developer to assist with the planning and future expansion of the existing wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) facility currently under construction by the Town of Fincastle and Botetourt County.  This project entailed Preliminary Engineering and final design for the expansion of a new 0.125 MGD WWTP to a 0.187 MGD WWTP as well as surveying, engineering, and construction of a new 12-inch sewer interceptor needed to replace an inadequate 8-inch sewer line.  As the new WWTP was currently under construction, ACS DESIGN was responsible for evaluating the current design and implementing a program to expand the headworks and tertiary treatment components of the system while not impacting current construction progress.  As a result, the headworks were upgraded to include grit removal equipment and provisions were made to upgrade the UV disinfection equipment during future expansions.  During the Preliminary Engineering process, ACS DESIGN uncovered the existence of substantial Inflow and Infiltration problems in the existing sewer system such that corrective actions were initiated by the Town of Fincastle to protect the biological integrity of the new WWTP once it is placed into operation.  It should be noted that this project required the close coordination between three different engineering firms, two municipalities, the State of Virginia (DEQ and VDOT), the General Contractor, and the developer.  Final engineering for this project will include the design of a third WWTP train, relocation of sludge digester basins, modifications of the existing sludge digester basins to become a third train clarifier, and modified yard piping.  Sewer System work includes final design for a 3,700 linear foot replacement sewer.  The construction cost estimate for this project is $1,500,000.  The developer, Santillane, LLC, working in conjunction with the Town of Fincastle through a contractual agreement, commissioned ACS DESIGN to provide professional services.
